Last summer, Don Gallery in collaboration with Fab-union Space co-hosted the solo exhibition of Hu Zi "Lover" which was curated by Robin Peckham. 40 works of gouache on paper and oil on wood-board were on display. After a year of preparation, the self-publishing exhibition catalogue by the same name Lover is now officially released. In the form of separate sheets, the catalogue includes part of the participating portraits and the exhibition text written by the curator. Each sheet can be mounted and framed in accordance with different requirements for archiving. In her long-term practice of making portraits, Hu Zi collates individual experiences for the construction of a self-image by fabricating the very unique touch of body boundaries. Both the exhibition and the catalogue provide a closer reading on the artist's retrospective study into art history. These portraits not only question the gaze and glance by the viewer, but also challenge those who are making use of their bodies to contract a convention with the human society.
