ZHANG Ruyi is participating the 2017 Glenfiddich Artists in Residence Programme at Dufftown, Scotland to conduct her commissioned works and related exhibits in three months. The residency programme was established in 2002 as an global-oriented art project by Charles Gordon, then President of William Grant & Sons Ltd. who is enamoured with art collections, inviting artists across the world to explore the geographies of its distillery in the summer of each year. Chinese artists have been involved in this programme consecutively for 11 years since 2007.
ZHANG’s artistic practice embeds itself in the logic of life, centred on the relationship between ego consciousness, physical space, and mundane experience. By withdrawing certain slices of time and information of materials, ZHANG is able to capture, conceal, retain or fabricate the materialisation of instant emotions carried out by the frictions between individuals and the reality where they refer to each other while being mutually restrictive.
