WANG Ningde's approach to Form of Light Series avoids the chemical process of affixing an image to the surface of a paper medium, instead taking a complete image and fragmenting it in an organized manner on a transparent film, which when exposed to specific illumination, presents an image of a complete shadow. As a result, the artist paints directly with light, creating ghostly images using a computer and human labor.
WANG Ningde investigates the nature and mystery of the photographing process in his Tangible Light series of video installations. WANG employs the photographic process rather than creating images in the traditional sense.
The installation in the Form of Light Series have the appearance of an old- fashioned camera obscura- a phantom suspended above reality itself. Furthermore, these grid photographs, which are made up of hundreds of components, defy the single cropped image that is commonly seen in traditional photography.
